Artist's Description
The Papyrus of Ani is a papyrus manuscript written in cursive hieroglyphs and illustrated with color miniatures created in the 19th dynasty of the New Kingdom of ancient Egypt. The "Book of the Dead" for scribe Ani from Thebes is the manuscript called the Papyrus of Ani. The psychostasia, Greek "weighing of souls'" is a method of divine determination of fate, which persists from the Iliad through to christian theology. In Egyptian mythology, where Duat is the Underworld, there would take place the Weighing of the Heart, in which the dead were judged by Anubis, using a feather, representing Ma'at, the goddess of truth and justice responsible for maintaining order in the universe. The heart was the seat of the life-spirit (ka). Hearts heavier or lighter than the feather of Ma'at were rejected and eaten by Ammit, the Devourer of Souls.
