Description
The Abbaye of Saint Antoine, the Sologne, France. Pilgrims suffering from ergotism (St Antony's fire) approaching the infirmary in which the relics and bones of the saint are preserved which were believed to cure the disease. Oil painting by Ernest Board (1877-1934) Claviceps purpurea (rye ergot fungus) grows on rye and related plants, and produces alkaloids that can cause ergotism in humans and other mammals who consume grains contaminated with its fruiting structure.
