Description
Slit-scan photograph of a pine cone. There are male and female pine cones. The male cone, called the staminate, bears pollen and is small and short-lived. This is a female or ovulate cone which receives the pollen and produces seeds. It is much larger and requires considerably longer to reach maturity, hence remains on the tree for up to two years.
