"Polio research a light is beginning to dawn." Poster by Herbert Bayer (1900-1985) showing a hand holding test tube. National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, 1949. The first effective polio vaccine was developed in 1952 by Jonas Salk and a team at the University of Pittsburgh. Salk's vaccine was licensed in 1955, after which children's vaccination campaigns were launched.
