Lincoln and his family painted by S.B. Waugh; engraved by William Sartain. Abraham Lincoln sitting in chair at the left end of a table with Thomas sitting next to him, Mary Todd is sitting on the right, and Robert Todd is standing behind the table. Portrait of Tad hangs on back wall. Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 - April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States, from March 1861 until his assassination in 1865. He led his country through the American Civil War, preserving the Union, while ending slavery, and promoting economic and financial modernization. Reared on the western frontier, Lincoln was mostly self-educated. He became a country lawyer, an Illinois state legislator and member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected president in 1860, but before Lincoln took office, seven southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederacy.
