Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas is a widespread soil bacterium which acts as an opportunic pathogen. This bacteria is pathogenic in humans, but mainly restricted to opportunistic infections in compromised hospital patients. Pseudomonas possess structural factors and toxins that enhance its virulence as well as rendering it resistant to most commonly used antibiotics. They are also common germs in hospitals, and cause middle ear suppuration, wound infection, and urinary disorder. Image width 5.45 micrometers.
