Saint Jerome in His Study. Painted by Master of Sir John Fastolf (French, active before about 1420 - about 1450); France; about 1430 - 1440. Tempera colors, gold leaf, and ink on parchment. Jerome (c.? 347 - 420) was a presbyter, confessor, theologian and historian, best known for his translation of most of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate), and his commentaries on the Gospels.
