Description
Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a seed. Flying seeds need a kind of ‘sail’ to get to a good new location. Wind dispersal, also called anemochory, is probably the most original form of seed propagation. The ‘sail’ of this seed meets various requirements. It is light-weight, water-repellent, sturdy and durable, yet biodegradable. This particular seed is of unknown species and comes from a rainforest in Colombia. Magnification 400x at 15x12cm image size.
