Description
Star trails above Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. Star trails are captured by long-exposure photography. In this case, the camera lens was open for 7 hours. The lines of light are made by the relative movement of the stars through the night sky as the Earth rotates. The center of the concentric trails, called the South Celestial Pole, is the point in the sky directly above the earth's South Pole. The colors of the trails reveal the variety of colors of the planets and stars. The bright North Star can be seen near the center.
