In Ancient Egypt, the goddess Nekhbet was patron goddess of Upper Egypt, and is here represented as a vulture holding a shen ring. In ancient Egypt, a shen ring was a circle with a line tangent to it, representing eternal protection. Tempera on paper facsimile by Charles K. Wilkinson, 1930.
