Artist's Description

Subatomic particle event, two gamma-rays. Photograph taken February 18, 1958. Bubble Chamber-400. In the physical sciences, subatomic particles are particles much smaller than atoms. Gamma radiation, also known as gamma rays, refers to electromagnetic radiation of an extremely high frequency and therefore consists of high-energy photons. Gamma rays are ionizing radiation, and are thus biologically hazardous. They are classically produced by the decay of atomic nuclei as they transition from a high energy state to a lower state known as gamma decay. A bubble chamber is a vessel filled with a superheated transparent liquid (most often liquid hydrogen) used to detect electrically charged particles moving through it.
