Description
"The Rainbow Fall from Livingstone Island," c. 1906, a souvenir photo created by Percy M. Clark (1874-1937). The railway reached Victoria Falls in 1905, leading it to be promoted as "the World's Riviera." Percy M. Clark captured these photos of the falls and sold them to travelers as souvenirs. Scottish explorer David Livingstone was the first non-African to see and name Victoria Falls in 1855, and his story made him a celebrity in Britain. Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya (Tokaleya Tonga the Smoke that Thunders), is located in southern Africa on the Zambezi River at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is classified as the world's largest falls, based on its width of 1,708 metres (5,604 ft) and height of 108 metres (354 ft), resulting in the world's largest sheet of falling water.
