Description
Color-enhanced SEM of the larva of the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti). As a larva, the yellow fever mosquito looks somewhat unkempt, as if it were wearing a wild, frizzy beard around its mouth. In fact, using these wire-like hairs, it swirls little food particles and bacteria in the direction of its throat. When doing so, they hang upside down on the surfaces of puddles or rain water caught in old tires. Tiny amounts of liquid are enough, provided they are nice and warm, since everything under 27°C is too "chilly" for the larvae. Magnification 1201 at an image size of 15x15 cm.
