Description
Yogurt bacteria. Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the bacteria Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. S. thermophilus (blue) are spherical, Gram-positive bacteria that often form chains, as seen here. This thermophile bacterium is capable of living at temperatures of 50-65 degrees Celsius. L. bulgaricus (orange) are Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria that grow in acid environments (including the human intestinal tract) and produce lactic acid by the fermentation of carbohydrates. Both of these bacteria are used in the manufacture of yogurt from milk, by incubation at a high temperature. Magnification unknown.
