Description
Horsefly. Colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a horsefly or gadfly, family Tabanidae. The females of this species are blood sucking parasites, while the males feed on nectar and pollen from flowers. These large flies have flat bodies and large compound eyes (green/red). The bite of the female is very painful, and the wound can bleed for some time because the horsefly saliva prevents blood from clotting. Horseflies are present around the world and transmit some blood-borne diseases.
