Description
Trichomonas vaginalis. Colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of two parasitic protozoans Trichomonas vaginalis. They are the cause of sexually transmitted disease in humans. These pear-shaped organisms are 15-20 microns in length. Four flagella arise from the blunt end (lower left) and there is an undulating membrane down one side. They infect the genito urinary tracts of both sexes in men this is usually symptomless, but in women vaginal infection may cause severe irritation and a foul-smelling discharge. Transmission is commonly, but not always, through sexual intercourse. Magnification x3000 at 5x7cm size.
