Artist's Description

Colorized scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of crow droppings. Crow feces represent unsanitary conditions in urban areas in North America as crows defecate onto sidewalks, walkways, cars etc. from trees which they choose to roost overnight all together. This micrograph was obtained by collecting a fresh dropping, dispersing it in a liquid fixative, allowing heavy particles to sediment, and capturing the bacteria-containing supernatant on a bacteriological filter for SEM. Image width 9.14 micrometers. Magnification 10,940x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
