Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a healthy gastric mucosa from the middle of the stomach with attached mucus (grey). In this enlargement, the individual cells of the mucous membrane are already recognizable. The stomach is a muscular, sac-shaped organ, which is upstream of the actual digestive tract. In the stomach the ingested food stays and is opened up with the help of stomach acid and enzymes. When the digestion is complete (a certain pH must be reached), the contents of the stomach are emptied into the intestine.Magnification is 230x at 15x12cm image size.
