Archeological excavation works at the ancient city of Ephesus, the second largest city in the Roman Empire in the 1st Century AD. The site lies 3 km southwest of Selcuk, on the west coast of Anatolia, in present-day Izmir Province, Turkey. Shown here is are artifacts found the "insula" --seven housing units, unearthed 1962 -1985. This Roman imperial housing in the Eastern Mediterranean dates from the first half of the fifth century AD. The ruins of Ephesus are a favorite tourist attraction, with easy access from Kusadasi. Archaeological research and restoration at Ephesus started in 1863 by the British Museum, and is funded today by the Austrian Archeological Institute. Only 10 percent of the ancient city of Ephesus has been unearthed. Work at the enclosed Terrace House is ongoing.
