Artist's Description

Color-enhanced scanning electron micrograph of goose droppings, which contain a large proportion of partially digested grass and bacteria. Geese multiply quickly and are becoming a nuisance, because they raid fields and lawns and their droppings are contaminating rivers, ponds, and lakes, and are fouling city parks and sidewalks. The droppings are a health hazard, particularly on playgrounds. In the samples examined by SEM rod-like bacteria (bacilli) were predominant, but cocci were also present. The bacteria were not identified taxonomically. Image width 16 micrometers. Magnification 6,250x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
