Artist's Description

Marshall Pinckney Wilder and William DeWolf Hopper, as Romeo and Juliet, played the balcony scene from a burlesque of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in a charity performance for yellow fever victims, September 27, 1888. William DeWolf Hopper (March 30, 1858 - September 23, 1935) was an American actor, singer, comedian, and theatrical producer. Although a star of the musical stage, he was best known for performing the popular baseball poem Casey at the Bat. Marshall Pinckney Wilder (September 19, 1859 - January 10, 1915) was an American actor, monologist, humorist and sketch artist who was one of the first persons with a disability to become a celebrity on his own terms.
