Color-enhanced SEM of the larva of a phantom midge or glassworm (Chaoborus crystallinus). The larva looks eerie and dangerous. And it is - at least for water fleas and mosquito larvae. Floating horizontally in the water, the larva lies in wait for them; almost invisible as it is transparent as glass, as one of their common names suggests. Only its massive mandibles are shaded, while the eyes are necessarily black since they are meant to collect and absorb light. The strong feelers detect vibrations in the water and so aid in tracking down the water fleas. And then it all happens in the blink of an eye: the glass worm shoots forward; the feelers now serve as pointy catching instruments and stab into the victim like daggers. Then they push it down to the mandibles. Lucky for us, this hunter only lives in the microcosm, only reaching 15 millimeters in length. It is amazing how the glass carnivore changes - that is, if it manages not get eaten up by some fish. Out of the puparia come peace...
