The bombardment commenced on March 22nd at four-fifteen PM, and was incessant day and night until the morning of the 26, at which time overtures were made for a capitulation of the city and also the Castle of San Juan de Ulloa (the Gibraltar of America). On March 27th the garrisons of both city and Castle surrendered as prisoners of war to the victorious arms of the United States." The Battle of Veracruz was a 20-day siege of the key Mexican beachhead seaport of Veracruz, lasting from March 9-29th in 1847.
