Times Building in center, Hotel Astor at right with flag. The Times Building was completed in 1904 to serve as the new headquarters of The New York Times. The paper's owner, Adolph Ochs, persuaded the city to rename the surrounding area (Longacre Square) after the newspaper, Times Square. To help promote the new headquarters, the Times held a New Year's Eve event welcoming the year of 1904 with a fireworks display set off from the roof of the building at midnight. The building, the 2nd tallest in the city at the time, incorporated a subway stop into its basement levels. The Times stayed in the building for less than 10 years before moving to a new building on 229 West 43rd Street. Hotel Astor was in operation from 1904 through 1967. The 35,000 square feet hotel was built in two stages, in 1905 and 1909-10, by the same architects in the same style. Upon completion, the structure occupied an entire city block at a reported total cost of $7 million.
