Artist's Description

Computer illustration of Rotavirus infecting GI tract tissue. This virus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children. It infects and damages the cells that line the small intestine and causes gastroenteritis. Most children have been infected at least once by the age of 5, and develop immunity, reducing the incidence and severity of further infections. The virions consist of an unenveloped, three-layered icosahedral protein capsid, up to 76.5 nm in diameter, enclosing double helix molecules of RNA.
