Description
Ash and steam eruption at Halemaumau, the summit crater of Kilauea volcano on the evening after its historic explosion on March 19, 2008 -- the first since 1924. Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes and is often associated with passive lava flows. But this shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has had a violent past. The glow seen here is issuing from the explosion vent and is being heated by molten rock beneath the surface.
