Color enhanced Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the gonorrhea, the most common reportable communicable disease in the united states. A contigious inflammation of the genital mucous membranes, gonorrhea may also affect the heart, rectum, joints, and oral mucosa. In women, the uretha, vulva, and fallopian tubes are affected. In men, a yellow pearulent discharge from the penis results from the inflammation of the uretha and can affect the prostrate, causeing painful urination. TEM 20,000x
