Description
Algae (diatoms) in sea ice, Bering Sea, May 2007. These microscopic organisms are adapted to live in sea ice and are one of the factors for the richness of the Bering Sea, and other polar and subpolar seas. They are a major food source for herbivorous plankton and are a very important part of the arctic food chain.
