Artist's Description

Boudica (died 60/61 AD) was queen of the Iceni tribe. Her husband, Prasutagus, had left his kingdom jointly to his daughters and the Roman Emperor when he died, but the Romans did not acknowledge the joint rule. Boudica was flogged and her daughters raped. Boudica was chosen as the leader of the Iceni and their neighbors to lead an assault on the Romans. Her army had great success in their battles and completely demolished the city of Camulodunum. According to Tacitus in his Annals, Boudica poisoned herself, Dio says she fell sick and died and then was given a lavish burial. engraving by William Sharp published in 1793, based on Boadicea Haranguing the Britons by John Opie (cropped and cleaned).
