Description
Color enhanced scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of Clostridium botulinum. C. botulinum is an anaerobic, gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium which causes botulism food poisoning. The toxin causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. In high doses is can cause paralysis of the respiratory muscles which can lead to death by asphyxiation. The botulinum toxin is also known as Botox and is injected under the skin of the face to paralyze muscles to smooth out wrinkles. Magnification x8000 when printed 10 cm wide.
