Description
The Malaysian Dead Leaf Mantid, Deroplatys lobata, is a cryptic predator in the forests of southeast Asia and the Indo-Australian Archipelago. This small predator sits in wait for a small insect to pass by. They grab potential pray items with their grappling arms equipped with long spines. The spines hold onto prey items and make prey capture an easier prospect. When threatened, this species enacts a threat display that involves spreading its wings and waving its body back and forth. The wings make the insect look much larger than it is. This specimen was photographed in Thailand, 2011.
