Description
Engraving of the first static electricity generator, designed by German scientist Otto von Guericke (1602-1686). Guericke was a German scientist, inventor, and politician. His major scientific achievements were the establishment of the physics of vacuums, the discovery of an experimental method for clearly demonstrating electrostatic repulsion, and his advocacy of the reality of action at a distance and of absolute space. In 1660-63 Guericke constructed a large ball of sulphur which could be turned on a spindle. As he rubbed his hand on it he noticed that the friction caused it to become strongly charged with static electricity. This image has been color enhanced.
