Artist's Description

The fingerprints of Vincenzo Peruggia (1881-1925), an Italian museum worker who stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in Paris, France, on 21 August 1911. He kept it under his bed and on his kitchen table for two years before trying to sell it to an Italian antique dealer, with the patriotic hope of bringing the painting "home" to Italy. He wrongly believed that the painting had been stolen by Napoleon; in fact, it had been legally purchased by King Francois I, Leonardo Da Vinci's final patron.
