Description
Germinating pollen grains of the Willow herb (Epilobium). At center right a cluster of pollen grains have come to rest on the stigma (lower left) of the flower. Each grain has three wing-like structures which assist in its dispersal by the wind. Some of this pollen is germinating. A tube, seen at above right, is growing out of a pollen grain which will penetrate the stigma. This pollen tube will grow down to the female ovary, and there fertilize an ovule with the male nuclei contained in the pollen grain.
