Description
Henry I (1068 - December 1, 1135) was a King of England (1100- 1135). Present at the place where his brother William II died in a hunting accident in 1100, Henry seized the English throne, promising at his coronation to correct many of William's less popular policies. He married Matilda of Scotland (first wife). She acted as regent of England in the absence of her spouse on several occasions. Matilda lived to see her daughter Matilda become Holy Roman Empress but died two years before the drowning of her son William. Henry remarried, but had no further legitimate children, which caused a succession crisis known as The Anarchy. Cassell's Illustrated History of England, 1865 (cropped and cleaned).
