Description
Color enhanced transmission electron micrograph of the herpes simplex virus. The herpes simplex viruses range in diameter from 140 to 180 nm. In an icosahedral capsid (green) is a linear, double-stranded DNA is a genome (red). The capsid contains a viral envelope (yellow-lipid layer, pink spikes). Between the capsid and the viral envelope is a variety of viral proteins called tegument, which are responsible for the regulation of gene expression in the host cell and the virus transition into a dormant latency stage.
