This image of the hippocampus was taken with an ultra-widefield high-speed multiphoton laser microscope. Tissue was stained to reveal the organization of glial cells (cyan), neurofilaments (green) and DNA (yellow). The microscope Deerinck used was developed in conjunction with Roger Tsien (2008 Nobel laureate in Chemistry) and remains a powerful and unique tool today (2012, almost 20 years after it was developed). The hippocampus is a major component of the brains of humans and other vertebrates. Humans and other mammals have two hippocampi, one in each side of the brain. It belongs to the limbic system and plays important roles in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory and spatial navigation. The hippocampus is located under the cerebral cortex; and in primates it is located in the medial temporal lobe, underneath the cortical surface.
