Description
Lava tubes are natural tunnels through which molten lava flows. They form when the surface skin of a channelized molten lava flow crusts over. The longer the flow continues, the deeper the tube becomes due to erosion. soon after, the molten lava on the inside drained away, leaving the outer crust in place. If part of the roof collapses, a skylight (an opening in the roof) is formed allowing the flowing lava to be visible from the surface. When the supply of lava stops at the end of an eruption or lava is diverted elsewhere, lava in the tube system drains downslope and leaves partially empty conduits beneath the ground. Lava stalactites commonly hang from the roof of lava tubes.
