19th century microscope. Composition of books, candle, spectacles, writing materials, and a microscope, all dated from the 19th century. This microscope is largely made of brass. It has a single eyepiece lens (upper left) and an objective lens (at center). A flat stage with hole held the specimen which was mounted on a glass slide. The specimen was illuminated by a mirror (at bottom) that reflected light from a light source. The 19th century was aperiod when microscopes improved dramatically with each new model. Microbiology and many other sciences benefitted greatly from these advances in the microscope.
