Description
Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin molecule that is found in red blood cells. The mutated hemoglobin forms polymers which cause the blood cells to be abnormally shaped and rigid. This malformation causes the cells to become stuck in retinal vessels, causing tissue to become ischemic.
