Description
3D visualization of sleep apnea taken from human scanned data. The head is shown in a sagittal section. The image to the left shows the airway unobstructed, and the image to the right shows an obstructed airway. Sleep apnea occurs when the body’s airway becomes obstructed during sleep, which causes breathing to cease. Sleep will be interrupted when the body’s airway closes off, causing sleep deprivation. If the body wakes from sleep repetitively, sleep cycles will be interrupted, daily activities will become more difficult, and hormonal imbalances can occur. The causes of sleep apnea typically have to do with an anatomical abnormality such as small nasal passages or a shorter jaw than average. If the cause of sleep apnea is abnormal upper airway anatomy, the muscles in the tongue and throat lay in a position that closes the throat off during sleep. Older age and obesity can also cause this condition.
