Description
Supernova remnant. Colored Chandra X-ray telescope image of supernova remnant G292.0+1.8. This expanding gas shell was blown off from an exploding star. Energy measurements have revealed a rapidly-spinning neutron star, or pulsar, at its core. A pulsar is a high-density body which releases regular pulses of radiation. This remnant contains areas (blue) enriched with the elements oxygen, neon and magnesium, produced within the original star and ejected by its explosion. Other areas (white/yellow) contain gases ejected before the explosion. The image was made by the advanced CCD imaging spectrometer.
