Description
Thermite reaction. Aluminum metal powder and iron oxide powder are mixed in a stoichiometric proportion (thermite mixture). The mixture is then poured on top of sand in a beaker to form a small mound. A short piece of magnesium ribbon is inserted into the mound and is lighted. The thermite reaction is highly exothermic, it produces a lot of heat and sends out sparkles of molten iron. The reaction is completed in less then a second.
