Description
Theâtre de l'Opera, 1896 Carnival, on the Saturday before Lent, Feb. 15, Gala Fancy-Dress Ball. Features a profiled woman in a billowing dress looking out over her shoulder as a shadowy male figure and other revelers dance around her. Jules Chéret (May 31, 1836 - September 23, 1932) was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of Belle Époque poster art. He has been called the father of the modern poster. The Theâtre de l'Opera is a 1,979-seat opera house, built between 1861-75 for the Paris Opera, but soon became known as the Palais Garnier, in recognition of its opulence and its architect, Charles Garnier.
