Artist's Description

Thomas "Tom" Paine (1737 -1809) was an author, pamphleteer, radical, inventor, intellectual, revolutionary, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Paine is most famous for writing "Common Sense", the pro-independence monograph pamphlet he anonymously published on January 10, 1776; signed "Written by an Englishman" and the novel "Rights of Man" in which he stated that popular political revolution is permissible when a government does not safeguard its people, their natural rights, and their national interests.
