Light micrograph of whitefish cells in anaphase stage of mitosis. Mitosis is the cell division of a nucleus, typically consisting of four stages prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Shown here, in anaphase, each centromere divides and the new chromosomes (each derived from one member of one of the sets of paired chromatids) begin to move toward the poles along a network of microtubules that from the spindle.
