Description
Arthritic hand. False color computer enhanced X- ray of a hand showing evidence of rheumatoid arthritis. Here, swelling and bone deformation is seen on each finger joint between metacarpal and phalanges bones (center, upper center). Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most common arthritic disease (after osteoarthritis), and typically affects joints of the fingers, wrist, feet and ankles, and often the hips and shoulders. As here the joints are often affected symmetrically. Treatment for pain and for restriction of movement in the affected areas is by use of anti- inflammatory drugs; physiotherapy may be used to preserve movement in inflamed joints.
