American Continental soldier, c. 1775. Engraved by John C. McRae from a painting by Alonzo Chappel (1828-1887). The American Continental Army was formed after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War by the Thirteen American Colonies. George Washington was Commander-in-Chief of the army throughout the war.
