Description
Francois-Auguste-René Rodin (November 12, 1840 - November 17, 1917) was a French sculptor. Many of his most notable sculptures were criticized during his lifetime. They clashed with the predominant figure sculpture tradition, in which works were decorative, formulaic, or highly thematic. His works departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory, modeled the human body with realism, and celebrated individual character and physicality. His reputation grew and he became the preeminent French sculptor and a world-renowned artist. Rodin remains one of the few sculptors widely known outside the visual arts community. Oil on wood by Francois Flameng, 1881 (cropped and cleaned).
