Description
An electric fan is shown here in silhouette, blowing air from left-to-right. Beneath the fan blades is a lit candle whose hot-air plume is captured by the fan and rolled up into its blade-tip vortices. Two clear hurricane-like vortices are revealed in this schlieren photograph, which was taken with a 1-microsecond exposure in order to freeze the air motion. The circular schlieren field-of-view shown here is provided by the 1-m-diameter parabolic mirror of the Penn State University Gas Dynamics Laboratory.
